Home Again

We made it back home and are happy to be with our daddy again! This week has been eventful and relaxing all at the same time. Casey has been home all day everyday and the girls are in heaven....I got a job and had my first day yesterday! It's a bookkeeping position for a local builder, only two days a week with some stuff to do from home as well, I am totally excited because Casey will be home to watch the girls for one of those days and then they will go to a friends house for the other day. I think it will work out great and be really good for all of us.
With the extra time I've had this week I finally got around to finishing the inside of the kitchen cabinets. I decided on a dark blue/grey and white contact paper on the shelves. I love how it turned out :)


the paint was still a little wet so it dried with a satin finish instead of glossy.

Now I have to decide what color to paint my blank wall........so many decisions!

Change

It seems as if the world is always changing. It happens all around us, seasons come and go, children grow up, people come into our lives and leave yet; here I am, still me. I'm still struggling with my own weaknesses, arguing about the same things, and wishing the same wishes. Is is possible to really change? To honestly not want the things you always have or stumble over the same rock on the same corner? The world tells us to be happy with who you are, to never think you're not perfect, you were born this way. All good advice, maybe. But I want more. I want to change what I don't like about myself, I want to strive for perfection, I want to have more and be better than what I was born with. Is that too much to ask? To hard to achieve? I don't think so and hopefully this year I can come a little closer, and bring my family with me.

Embarking

The house is quiet.....something it hasn't been for quite some time. This morning I shipped Casey off to Kotzebue, my family back to Washington, and the girls have finally fallen asleep.

Casey is scheduled to be gone until the 27th of this month and the girls and I are leaving for Washington until the 24th. Our little house will be so lonely in the cold dark of winter and how ironic is it that I'm headed to South West Washington for some sun and warmer temps?

The crazy traveling and not planning ahead farther than a month has officially begun and I'm already tired. Maybe that's just my huge lack of Vitamin D..... either way I'm looking forward to when my little family will be back together again. And I am going to miss the snow and my mountains, not so much the negative 3 temperature.

Embarking on yet another adventure, whoever said family life would be boring and monotonous??

These are the days that I am so grateful we live in such a beautiful place. I'm also in love with cross country skiing. I've only done it twice but I would be ready to make it my lifetime passion, the quiet, the snow, the cold, the scenery.

There is a great place to go see Santa, feed some reindeer and a moose, and do some sledding... The Reindeer Farm. It was a ton of fun!

Snow

We had near record breaking snow fall in November which quickly melted away in December thanks to some southern storms bringing in warmer temps....hovering around freezing. My biggest Christmas wish was for some more fluffy stuff and it came! We have a few more feet of perfect sparkly white powder so we have been trying to get out everyday and enjoy it, as well as get some coveted sunlight.

Christmas Fun

Some of my family flew up from Washington to hang out with us for Christmas this year and it has been a blast!
The girls have been so happy to have so much attention and awesome new toys to play with. Christmas this year was very simple and I really enjoyed focusing on the birth of our Savior. We have been so blessed with awesome friends, and wonderful family.

I'm pretty sure this is a very boring blog to follow, so I thought I would spice it up a bit by putting some more of my thoughts on here......and then I thought yea, right like I have exciting thoughts. They usually run along the lines of, 'what do I need to clean today....I wonder what I'm going to make for dinner' but, on the off chance that something interesting does come up I'm going to try and write it down here. woohoo! ( I can tell you're all on the edge of your seats :)
We're headed out to go caroling with some friends....that's right I said caroling, not something that is our forte but I'm sure we'll have lot's of fun, with two tone-def husbands and 5 kiddos running around I bet we will be the best show in town :) (OK they're not completely tone-def but you get the picture)

Thanksgiving and Other Adventures

We had a low-key thanksgiving with a couple families from our ward, I successfully cooked the turkey and pumpkin pies which I was very worried about :) we played some Phase 10 and watched the kiddos run around. I also participated in some late night black friday sales at Toy's R Us and Target, I got what I needed at Toy's R Us but Target was a little disappointing. No pepper spray or theft incidents so that was good.

Casey I were thinking the other night about how crazy this past year has been. Someone asked me a question about where we were earlier this year and I honestly couldn't even remember. 4 different jobs for Casey and a few different living arrangements for us, including trips to Idaho, Oregon and Hawaii. It all seems like just a big blur, but I am so grateful for everything that has happened, for all the traveling we have been able to do, places we've seen, and fun we've had.

This holiday season has brought on another adventure for us as Casey was laid off just before Thanksgiving. So our future looks much the same as our past year has been. I honestly do not have a single thing to complain about, we have been having a blast with our Daddy home, we have been blessed beyond measure and we're looking forward to the many opportunities for more travel and fun to be had!

Hike

Had a beautiful hike yesterday, this is just a few miles from our home,

and used most often by cross country skiers.

This shows you the "sun line" or the shadow of the mountains behind us, this is as high as the sun gets right now so in a few more months we'll get to see the sun again :)

This guy had an absolute blast, he loves the snow

it was a little cold, it's amazing how much difference the sun makes in warmth even when it doesn't get up over the mountains. It was about 5 degrees :) which is a heat wave compared to our Alaskan brothers in Fairbanks at - 40....that's right negative forty degrees

So, it is time

the kitchen will never truly be finished

but I'm ready to show you all of our hard work :)

as a refresher here is the way our kitchen looked when we bought the house

and the new and improved

I don't know what to do with this window,

paint the frame white, get a curtain?

There are still a few last minute things, some more door knobs,

touch up on some paint

I used semi-gloss bright white paint for the cupboards, it is easier to get dirty

but very easy to wipe right off

granite countertops (green tea) and gray backsplash

All in all I am very happy with the results.

I am in major need of some decorating advice and I think it needs an

accent color but I'm not sure how to incorporate that or what color to use.

As well matching appliances but that is more of a sell your house tactic

and we're not to that point yet.

This project has been a lot of fun to do ourselves and has really gotten me

excited to start work on the other rooms :)

I know owning a home has had a bad rap lately but I am really enjoying it!

Hunting for Bears

Casey has been going out with a couple friends looking for bears, any kind of bear. Here are a few pics he's been able to shoot since he hasn't seen anything to shoot with his gun :)

Casey and Gauge have been having all sorts of fun exploring the mountains and trying to find those bears!

Fairbanks and The North Pole

Casey had a conference to go to in Fairbanks and we were able to tag along....We've never been up that way before so I was excited to see what that part of the state was like.

This is the only photo of Fairbanks I took....we were leaving the university museum and there is a great view of the valley from the little hill that the campus is on. I love this about Alaska, that there can be a good sized town there and you wouldn't even know it through all the trees :)

The girls again did great in the car, it took us about 6 hours to get up there. We didn't make it the hot springs and ice museum so we'll have to make another trip one of these days.

Kitchen Facelift

This has been a very slow process, and is still in the works but I have been working very hard to give my kitchen a bit of a face lift :) I have painted the cupboards, put in new countertops and sink, new paint on the walls, and now just waiting to install the tile backsplash.......here are some before pictures and hopefully the afters will be ready by next week! These were taken in the dark, with Casey's i-phone and before we moved in, so all the stuff isn't ours :)

We had a fun time playing in the leaves the other night, Addi has a love hate relationship with getting messy...she wants to do what Megan is doing but she hates getting her hands dirty.....pretty funny, so it took a while to warm up to actually touching the leaves.

Denali

The weather did not cooperate very well on our trip to Denali but it was really neat to see so much of the Alaska countryside. We drove about 600 miles in 4 days. The girls did great, they are seasoned little travelers. Our accommodations ranged from truly rustic Alaskan to drug house but now we have first hand experience of where NOT to stay :)

We were able to see a bunch of moose, some caribou (my first), a couple beavers, a couple bald eagles and a porcupine but we were pretty bummed about the clouds in the park. The same thing happened to us when we visited the Grand Canyon a couple years ago, we couldn't even see more than 50 yards in front of us ....LAME.
I had fun on this trip though and it made us consider moving out to the "bush" as they call it here.....who knows?

So we tried the camping thing again, I don't think we got anymore sleep this time around but it was a lot of fun! We went to the local Eagle River campground with some friends of ours, the Shaws, and the kids had a blast running around together.

I decided to be sneaky and surprise my family. On our way home from the the Schanz reunion we flew to Portland, I had a friend of my Mom's ask Mom to pick some one up from the airport for her and surprise! It was us :)

Family Reunion

We were able to fly down to Idaho for the annual Schanz Family Reunion, and we had a great time. The flight and driving to Idaho Falls took all day so I was nervous about how the girls would do, but they were awesome! The local for the reunion this year was Bear Lake, lot's of fun but time went by so fast! We spent a lot of time at the beach, in the pool, on the boat and 4-wheeling.

Camping

We were finally able to organize a camping trip this last weekend. We still know next to nothing about where the best places to go are around here so we got some advice from our awesome neighbors and hit the road!

We ended up going to a camping mecca for 4-wheeling and motorbikes, at the same time that everyone and their dog did too! So it was a very busy place, long into the wee hours of the night. That, combined with no darkness lead for a very long night of sleeplessness. Except for Megan who managed to sleep through loud motorbikes, shooting and Addison screaming for most of the night :)

On our way home we decided to drive through Hatcher's Pass. We have driven by both ends of that road and have always wanted to explore it. We thought it was just the hypotenuse line of a triangle network of roads (if that makes any sense) and that we would just explore some the neighborhoods that sat along that stretch of road.......were we in for a surprise! It ended up taking us straight up into the mountains along a dirt road passing forgotten gold mines and some still in operation. It reminded me of how big this country is and that there are so many things hidden behind these great big mountains.

Heat Wave

Some fun shots Casey took of jumping on the trampoline with the sprinkler underneath...the first time this year it has been warm enough to do so....about 75 degrees :) It's been hovering in the 60's all summer and we have loved it, just warm enough to not need a jacket and cool enough that you can go out and enjoy the outdoors with out roasting. I do miss the occasional hot summer day for water fun though.

Super fun, we're headed down to Idaho in a couple weeks and I'm sure

we'll be sweatin' like pigs the entire time!

That's what our neighbors called to say at 10:30 pm last night....A big black bear came wandering through the neighborhood looking for something to munch on, he was too quick to get a picture but I'm much more cautious about going outside now!

Casey has started working at the Chickaloon Village Clinic and we were able to attend one of their gatherings to eat and watch some native dancing. Super snazzy outfits and lot's of fun things for the girls to do. They had a rock wall that we tried to get Megan to climb up but she freaked out as soon as she got up there....maybe next time :)

The Bore Tide

So, it's this amazing feat in the Turnagain Arm that the tide comes completely in

and out twice a day.....the amazing feat being how much water

comes in and out and how long of a distance it does that.

anyway

When the tide comes in it brings with it a wall of water, think mini tsunami

very mini tsunami

and they have the schedule of when that wall of water will be coming in

so tourists can catch it with their awesome cameras.

Well, we made it to Bird Point to watch this amazing wave...

Pretty wimpy little wave that didn't quite live up to it's reputation....

Fishing for Reds

Casey's parents came up to visit from Idaho

and we had to do some fishing while they were here.

We had great luck with catching the reds on the Klutina River

out by Glennallen. Casey and his dad went out really early

and us girls joined them later after we had eaten breakfast :)

It took Casey and Dennis 4 hrs to catch their limits....

I got mine within 30 minutes :) 9 fish in total,

the last catch of the day was mine and it was the biggest fish!

This was my first experience with salmon fishing and I had a blast.

later that day we floated down another river...can't remember the name

fishing for kings...we were not successful but it was a really nice float

My favorite way to cook them has been grilled with some brown sugar and hickory...

We made it back to Valdez and the sky was still

filled with clouds and rain.

But, the snow was gone and the waterfalls had melted.

We took a Glacier Cruise to Columbia Glacier

and were able to see a lot of wildlife and awesome icebergs.

There were three Orcas that followed the boat for a while,
dolphins, a grey whale, stellar sea lions, bald eagles, sea otters.
Pretty amazing, a pretty long boat ride for the girls
but they did really well.

I've been trying to get in the habit of going for a walk on a new trail everyday

and today we made it to the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail in Anchorage

It was a beautiful day, 65 degrees and not a cloud in the sky, as well as

a holiday so it was a very busy place. People, dogs, bikes

(they are crazy about their bikes around here)

Job News

Casey has made a decision.

(gasp .... ooooooo ..... awwww)

This is big people, very big.

Casey signed on with the Chickaloon clinic in Sutton, AK

about 40 minutes north of our house,

he's not excited about the commute but he is very excited about the job.

He will be running his own clinic for the local Native Tribe.

Right now he is in Kotzebue working for a couple weeks, he'll take a couple weeks off

and then back to work!

Casey had a job interview down in Kenai yesterday

so the girls and I went along to enjoy the scenery.

Beautiful coastline, that you can actually walk on! (unlike Anchorage)

Shades

The sun has started to set pretty late up here,

it doesn't really get dark until around 9:30 so it was time

to make some light blocking shades for our bedrooms, I got this fabric

on sale and with coupons at Joanns. The light blocking liner fabric I used was only

$6 a yard, much cheaper than I was expecting and it's insulated too.

They were pretty simple to make....obviously not professional grade

but work great for the girls' room. I used a tutorial from my copy of

"The Sewing Book" (amazing)

And it keeps out the light beautifully......

but, Megan still complains that "it's not dark outside" and therefore she should

not have to go to bed yet :)

Gauge

We've been searching for a dog for a while, we wanted a good family dog

and both Casey and I are partial to labs, particularly chocolate.

I finally found an ad on the Alaska List, like craigslist, for a 2 yr. old chocolate lab, fully trained

and a great family dog. We were sold!

Megan was unsure at first, on our way home with Gauge in the back she said,

"I think we should get a cat" but the girls have warmed right up to him

and Megan thoroughly enjoys bossing him around and feeding him his dinner.

Easter

It was really hard to get into the real spirit of Easter this year,

I think mainly because we have been away from home

and I had no time to prepare for Sunday....

so it was pretty low key

The girls didn't even get real Easter dresses this year,

and I didn't push very hard to get decent picures.

Mostly I was stressing out about playing the stinking organ in church.....

I have to tell myself every week that no one is listening to me, seriously that's my mantra

but on holidays it's harder to tell myself that, I feel like I have the responsibility

to make or break everyone's holiday spirit...that's a lot of pressure!

But honestly, no one is really listening...right?....at least until I mess up :)

But Easter dresses and organ playing aside, I am very grateful

for the blessings we have and for our Savior. The Atonement is so essential

to our purpose here on earth, without it our lives would mean nothing. I love Jesus Christ

So, my solution for no more picture storage is to just start another blog....

with the same address, and change the address of the original blog...

does that make sense to anyone??

Anyway the link to the original blog with all of the posts from the last

3 or 4 years is right over there on the side bar, where it says

"Past Adventures"

In case you want to reminisce through out our lives.....since we're so exciting and all.....

A friendly sea otter at the boat docks

It was a cloudy day and it snowed on us as we drove the 3 hours south to Valdez.

The scenery was still breathtaking even though we could only see the bottoms

of the mountains through the clouds.

Frozen Waterfalls

Casey and I have tickets for a one day glacier cruise out of Valdez

so we will be back to see more "amazing sights".
